Sausage is normally sliced before serving. A sausage is, and sausages are, normally served whole.

Also, sausage is normally served cold and sauseges are normally served hot.

Note that in both I my posts I have used the word 'normally'. Note, too, that when I sit down to a plate of sausage and mash, I am actually about to eat sausages and mash.

When I make veggie sausage casserole, I use either 4 whole sausages (ie I leave them whole in the finished dish) or I cut up 2 sausages into smaller pieces. Whichever I do, the dish is "sausage casserole" but I put sausages in it.

Hot or cold doesn't have anything to do with the naming in my experience. It's whether the sausages are intact, individual pieces or not. If the sausages have been cut up or turned into loose meat, then refer to it as "sausage." If there are individual links, then ask if one wants some "sausages."
