Hi teachers,

Is there any confectionery shop? Correct?

Many thanks

Is there any reason for this list of somewhat strange sentences you are asking about, Naeem?

No, I am just learning how a native speaker would say.

One might ask: Is there a confectionery shop around here/in the neighborhood/close by?

Sweet shop in BrE = candy store in AmE. These are by far the most common usages in their respective homes. I don't know where you'd be likely to hear confectionery shop.

Additionally, sweet shops/candy stores are rarities these days.

Sweets/candy/chocolate are to be found in any general store/minimarket/supermarket/newsagent's/filling station etc.

Is there any confectionery shop? is correct but not natural and not used by native speakers rather they use sweet or candy shop, right?

Native speakers are unlikely to say, "Is there any sweet/candy shop?"

I know in Australia you'd be likely to hear 'lolly shop' in regards to a confectionery store. They're not as rare as stated in this thread. (At least in Australia)

When I was a child, we called those shops sweety shops, corner shops and paper shops. They were usually situated on a street corner and sold newspapers and sweets, hence the various names. Now, those little independent shops are few and far between. They have been mostly replaced with "convenience stores" which are usually part of a chain and are much bigger, some more like mini-supermarkets.

I have never heard or used "confectionery store/shop".

Note that as 5jj said, we wouldn't say "Is there any ... shop?" You will normally hear "Is there a ... shop nearby?" or "Are there any ... shops [in this street/town/country]?"

We have several confectionery shops in New York. They tend to be very upscale and very expensive.
