Is it wrong to use RUMOR in the active voice?

They rumor about the king's wedding.

As far as I can see in dictionaries it is used only in the passive voice. Is it really so?

I can't think of any natural-sounding sentences in which rumour (BE spelling) is used in the active voice in modern English.

Most of the examples I found in a quick search were from the 19th century. I agree with Rover.- I wouldn't use it.
