We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.


I have just come across this statement said by Charles Kingsley. However, I confess that I do not entirely understand its meaning. Would you mind helping me a bit?

It's relatively straightforward. It might help to know which bit is confusing you.
"All we need in order to be happy in life is something to be enthusiastic about. But anyone looking at us would think that the most important requirements for happiness were comfort and luxury, and they aren't."
