[Idiom] a foul smell

Please check out the following sentences.

(1) Consequently, the conduit was clogged, and that caused a foul smell to make you sick.
(2) It was a gross to see the filthy and mess in teachers' washroom.

And 'conduit' is a rather formal word, usually applying to pipes or housings that contain wires or cables - apart from the metaphorical use (=a means or route for communications). Use 'drain? 'Pipe' (if cylindrical)? Gutter (if open)?

Also, here foul smell is literal not idiomatic.
 
'To make you sick' is not necessary.
