I'm looking for a good synonym for "relent" or "give in" for the following context.
I remember when I was a child, my mom and dad had an argument almost every day. It was not too serious, but my mom was the one who always .................. .
This word is usually used in such contexts when you mean someone wouldn't like to go on. And it doesn't necesserily mean that person who doesn't like to continue is weaker. Probably because he / she is less belligerent.

Thanks, I thinlk that works.
But isn't it a little too formal or literary?

You didn't stipulate the register you were looking for. 'Capitulate' might be too formal for you, too, but that could work.

Why not stick with 'give in'? Does it have to be a single word?

No, not necessarily. So if your suggestion is "give in" and it's normal and natural, I'll go for it.
Thanks.

I just thought of 'back down', too.
