"Mr. Sandman" was written by song-writer Pat Ballard and first recorded by The Chordettes. It became the first hit for them, staying at #1 for an amazing seven weeks in 1954 and launching their career. The Chordettes eventually went on to peek into the Top-40 nine times total.

Why the article an in "an amazing seven weeks"?

The amazing time is seen as a (singular) period of seven weeks.

... went on to [STRIKE]peek[/STRIKE] peak ...

If I wrote "I spent amazing seven weeks in Spain", I think you would recognise it as wrong. If you remove "an", you have to rearrange the words to "I spent seven amazing weeks ...". However, that has a different meaning.

... seven amazing weeks = seven weeks that were all amazing
... an amazing seven weeks = an amazing period of time, that happened to last for seven weeks

Would it be wrong to drop this an?

It also compares this feat to other records that have been at the top- few will have managed a period this long.

... went on to [STRIKE]peek[/STRIKE] peak ...

I also thought so at first, but I do now think that the writer did intend to say peek (to peek into the Top 40 nine times).

It peaked once, and peeked again and again.
