And so it is when we come to know God. It is a chance to start over. We begin by admitting the unmanageability of our lives. We have tried and have failed miserably. Then we cry out to God in fear and desperation.

Which part of speech is the word "so" in the above passage, "an adverb" or "a pronoun"?

I doubt that there is some part missing before 'And so it is when we come to ...'.

No, there's no reason to think something is missing.

- And so it is when we come to know God.
- And that's how it is when we come to know God.
- And it is that way when we come to know God.

So what do you think? Pronoun or adverb?

The clause in red is a noun clause, not an adverb clause.
The phrase in blue is a noun phrase, not an adverb phrase.

I do not purport to be much of a grammarian but I have my doubts about that. It is so and It is that way seem pretty much identical to me. Ergo, if so is an adverb that way must also be adverbial.

Sitifan, I have had to edit posts #1 and #3 so that they're in the default font and font size. Please don't give us extra work to do.
