...appreciate You / Your Taking the Time...

Is it correct to say:

"I appreciate YOUR taking the time to write to us." ("your taking the time" as gerund)

or should we say:

"I appreciate YOU taking the time to write to us."???

You'll see both forms used. Formally, 'your' is preferred.

I believe tdol is correct, because what is being appreciated is the "taking of the time" - which belongs to you.

The logic behind the formal use is sound to me- we don't use object pronouns in standard English before nouns, though 'me book' is used is regional variants, so a possessive adjective makes more sense before a gerund. However, the majority of users will use 'me'- from a descriptive perspective, it is hard to take the line that the majority are wrong. ;-)
