Does only "Are you learning " work here? Not "Do you learn"? The difference taught here in this example is that the latter, present progressive is about the recent or right now activity, while the present is for a long time?

44.a2)A: (pointing to a guitar) (Do you learn, Are you learning ) to play the guitar?
B: Oh,no. a friend of mine left that guitar here.

"Do you learn?" doesn't work.

Sorry, that was a typo. Now, you can answer on the satisfied condition -Whew, I really cared about all the spellings!
 
Could you let me know why "do you learn" doesn't work?
 
It's not colloquial. 'Are you learning?' means 'Are you having lessons?'

In the context given, I might also ask 'Do you play the guitar?' — not 'Are you playing the guitar?'
