herd immunity
in American English
NOUN

the immunity that occurs when an entire group of animals or people become immune to a particular infection, as with universal vaccination

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/herd-immunity
------------

Which one does the "
as with universal vaccination" part modify?

a. The red part.
b. The blue part.
c. (a + b)

I assume that it is (c). What do you think?

The definition isn't even a good one. Universal vaccination is not necessary (universal meaning everyone gets vaccinated).

The idea of herd immunity is that enough people get immunized and that prevents the pathogen from spreading to the susceptible members. The definition of "enough" can vary depending on what illness is being discussed.

Thank you, SoothingDave. :)

After rereading the definition, I changed my mind. Now I think (b), the blue part, is being modified. What do you think?

I mean, I take the sentence to mean:

When an entire group of animals or people become immune to a particular infection, as with universal vaccination, the herd immunity occurs.

What do you think? Any comment is welcome. :)

Hi, friends.

I am asking this question because I would like to know which is "with universal vaccination".

I assume that it is "an entire group of animals or people with universal vaccination, so they become immune to a particular infection, and then the herd immunity occurs".

Am I right?
:)

But herd immunity can take place at levels below 100%- things like how contagious an illness is affect this.
