[Grammar] Awake from a bad dream

İs "awake from a bad dream" regular English?

And which tense should I use in that sentence?

The verb tense very much depends on context. Do you have some for us?

"To awake from a bad dream" is natural English. We also say "to be awoken by a bad dream".

As Mike said, context dictates the right tense. Having said that, #2 doesn't work in any context (and I'm struggling to make #3 sound natural).

Assume that I tell a friend what happened last night.

-I had awoken from a bad dream and I went to kitchen to drink water and saw a stranger in my garden.

That's fine but your original sentence was "I had awoken from a bad dream last night". That doesn't work.

Setting aside the grammar considerations, all three make it sound like you had a bad dream last night and then you awoke- probably in the morning. Nothing unusual about that.

Better to change the word order and switch to the passive to make it more clear:

Last night I was awakened by a bad dream. I went to the kitchen to drink some water and saw a stranger in my garden.
