[Vocabulary] beg for alms or solicit for alms

Hello,

Here is a sentence from a project turned in by one of my students:

'Furthermore, once Augustus had a dream (the content of which is unknown to us) that scared him out of his wits and caused him to start begging for alms on a certain day every year.'

Is it OK to leave the sentence as it is or should 'begging for alms' be changed to 'soliciting for alms' or 'panhandling'?
