Both my cat and my dog like bacon-flavored treats.

1. Can I not write 'my' again after 'and' since both are mine.
- Both my cat and dog like bacon-flavored treats.

2. Are these 2 sentences correct? I tend not to repeat the subject in this type of sentence.
a. Mr Smith works as an engineer and he lives in Canada.
b. Mr Smith works as an engineer and lives in Canada.

I think working as an engineer and living in Canada are two different things.

For "b" I would say something like the following. (See below.)

Mr. Smith works as an engineer and also owns an auto parts shop.

Yes, you can omit the second "my" and you don't need to repeat the subject. "Mr. Smith works as an engineer and lives in Canada" is fine.

thanks very much!

In this case, do I need to put a comma before the conjunction 'and'.

I learn that when using 'and' to join 2 independent clauses, a comma should be used. Since there is no need to repeat the subject, do I need to use a comma.

Note my corrections above. Remember to capitalise the first word of every sentence and to use the correct punctuation mark at the end. You asked two questions but didn't use any question marks. According to Google, Cantonese uses question marks in the same way English does so there's no excuse for you forgetting them!

No comma is needed in that specific example.

a) Both my cat and my dog like bacon-flavored treats and wafers.
b) Both my cat and my dog like bacon-flavored treats, and wafers.

Which is correct? (b) looks strange to me.
