I've seen brunette many times. I don't think I've seen brunet. The dictionaries I've consulted say that a brunette is female, and a brunet is male.

I'd like to confirm whether brunet is a commonly used word people would understand, or just something that's officially a word in dictionaries, but no one ever uses it and no one would understand it.

I've never seen "brunet". It makes sense but I wouldn't use it. The only distinction in hair colour based on gender I'm familiar with is "blond/blonde".

I've never even heard the word used in reference to a man. Only to women.
