Can 'Sure, why not?' be used this way?

I know this is usually an answer to suggestions. I wonder whether I can use it in the way shown below too or I should just replace it with a yes.

'You killed him?'
'Sure. Why not? What's the big deal?' the psycho shrugged.

I would either say 'Yes, I did...' or 'I surely did...'.

"Sure, why not?" as a response to that question would equate to "Yeah, let's say that I did, whether I did or not".

Perhaps:

Sure, why not? Is it a big deal?

If you want the reader to know the person is a psycho then I suggest that you do so by describing that person's behavior.
