Can we use 'must' in past tense?

Is there a way to construct the below sentence using 'must', to make it stronger, instead of 'have to'?

"How many bears have you had to shoot?"

No. "Must" can't be used in a past tense/voice (except in "must have been").

"Must" isn't stronger than "have to".

About the second part, are you saying 'I have to do it' and 'I must do it' is of the same level of constraint?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "of the same level of constraint" but I think I get the gist of your question.

There have been multiple threads on the forum about any perceived difference between "have to" and "must". Some of us see a difference and some don't.
