[Grammar] Can you put a semicolon before "so"?

Usually, you put a comma before the word "so". I have written a sentence with it below.

(1) We didn't like the movie, so we decided to go home.

I am going to change the punctuation in the sentence.

(2) We didn't like the movie; so, we decided to go home.

Is it wrong to put a semi-colon before "so" and a comma after it? Please explain it. Thanks a lot.

I'd just write 'We didn't like the movie so we decided to go home'.

Stick to what you know is correct. There's rarely anything to be gained by adding extra punctuation. It makes the sentence clunky and disjointed.
