Can we say:

competition/contest/tournament in + name of sport/activity

eg. competition in football - (They took part in the competition in football.)

or
football competition - (They took part in the football competition.) ?

No, they are not natural in most cases.

"They took part in the football tournament/contest/competition" would be most natural.

Thank you.
What would be the most natural way of talking about the participation in sports competitions or inviting to them?

Was there something confusing about my use of the words "most natural" in my previous post?
