When you are making a phone call to an organization with different departments, and your phone call is answered by an operator. Can you ask him or her

Can you connect me to the HR deparment?
Can you connect me with somebody from the HR department?

I am using "to" to ask the operator to transfer my call to a certain department, and I am using "with" to be able to talk to an individual. Am I right? or can I also say

Can you connect me to somebody from the HR department?

Regards,
Aamir the Global Citizen

Aamir, in this scenario "to" and "with" are fully interchangeable. Whether the target is a single person or a group of people does not impact your choice. I think "to" would be my natural choice but that may vary by region.

I would use to, though put me through to sounds more natural to me. I would use connect with if I asked someone to help me meet or get in touch with someone in the department, not just the switchboard.

Do you mean in your case you would use "put me through to" in both the cases in which you are asking the operator to transfer your call to a certain department as well as to connect you with an individual by transferring your call to him, like.

Can you put me through to the marketing department? (Department)
Can you put me through to Jonathan Griffith? (Individual)

Are both of them correct?
