writing a research paper requires careful documentation of sources.
Please diagram it for me.

Good morning, Ms. Hansen.
(1) May I give you my high-school level input?
(2) I, too, love diagramming.
(3) Writing a research paper = complete subject.
(a) writing = simple subject (a gerund)
(b) a research paper = object of the gerund.
(i) a = adjective (I think college-level people call it a so-called determiner).
(ii) research paper = compound noun.
(a) Or you could say that "research" is an adjective that modifies the noun "paper."
(4) requires = verb
(5) careful documentation = object of the verb.
(a) "careful" is adjective that modifies the noun "documentation."
(6) of sources = prepositional phrase that modifies (belongs to) the noun "documentation."
(a) of = preposition
(b) sources = noun/ object of preposition "of."

Since you like diagramming, I strongly recommend that you go to the
"Diagramming" forum at this website. There is an outstanding teacher
who will use the old-fashioned (but great) Reed-Kellogg diagramming
system to draw you a "picture" of how all these words and sentences
fit together.
Have a nice day!
