Dear teachers,
Would you please tell me how I should parse the following sentence ? What is the verb phrase ? Is it followed by a direct object or a subject complement (predicate nominative) ? Would you please give me a justification ?
In "They didn’t want to look suspicious", the verb is "didn't want" or "didn't want to look" ?
What kind of pattern is it ? They = subject
1) didn't want = transitive verb
to look suspicious = direct object
or
2) didn't want to look = intensive verb
suspicious = subject complement ?
Thank you for your help.
