The best way would be to use "but for 'but/pero' and 'yet' for 'yet/todavia/aun'; then, when you've become more familiar with the language, you will understand better when to use "yet' for 'but' and 'but' for 'yet'.

But/Yet/Still, if you have to choose between:
"She is but a child" and "She is yet a child", you can write: "She is still a child".

Perhaps you could write some sentences in which you aren't sure which to use?

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Hello, Maria.

(1) Some people say that it is better to use "yet" when you are

SURPRISED:

She is a nurse, yet she smokes 20 cigarettes a day!!!

I am ugly, yet many ladies find me attractive!!!

I told him that there was a shark in the water, yet he still
went swimming!!

She doesn't know a word of my language, yet she seems to understand everything I say!!!

That movie was really boring, yet I can't seem to forget it.

(2) Some people also say that "yet" is something like "although":

Although I am ugly, many ladies ....

Although she is a nurse, she smokes ....

Although that movie was boring ....

***** Thank you *****
