I sometimes say "Do I understand it right that it means x?" Is it a natural structure? I have no idea where I got it and whether it's common and correct. But I like it, for some reason. :) Is that okay or should I get rid of it?

I simply write 'Does it mean ...' or 'Do you mean ...' in my questions.

I do it, too, but (subconsciously maybe) I use the structure in post 1 over and over again. Having used it in the previous thread, I decided to find out once and for all :)-)) if it's grammatical and common or not.

Do I understand correctly that ...?
Am I right in thinking that ...?

After someone has said something that might have been confusing or ambiguous, you could say "I think you mean XXX. Did I understand that correctly?"

Sorry, it's not natural. Use Matthew or ems's suggestions.

You will hear people saying If I understand it right..., when they are not 100% certain about something.
