I don't get the meaning of "the object of exacting analyses". What does "the object of exacting analyses" mean? Would anyone explain it clearly?

Actually I am confused which source should I mention because I found It from the 'question bank' while reading. Yes, when I googled it, I found it in several website. It may be a GRE question.

Actually, Ishmam, your question calls attention to a bit of slightly careless writing by the anonymous author.

The link you provided says that meticulous and exacting are equally acceptable answers. That should get you a long way towards understanding.

The passage seems to say that, probably because of his stern criticism of the works of others, Chase himself received a lot of critical attention from other writers. But of course it was the novels of Chase rather than the man himself that were subjected to literary criticism. I.e. that were the object of exacting analyses. That's where the passage is slightly muddy, in conflating the man with his body of work.
