1. Every one of us deserves equal treatment.
2. Every one of us deserve equal treatment.
I know that #1 observes the rule (The subject "one" is singular.)
I have noticed, however, that many native speakers say #2 (because they are influenced by the proximity of "us"). In fact, last night I heard a sentence similar to #2 that was uttered by the leader of our city's teachers' / teachers / teacher union [labor union].
Which sentence do you recommend that we members use?
Thank you,
James
