My father submitted his magnum opus to Academic Press, one of the major American academic publishers. He and Academic agreed that the book would be set directly in pages, rather than the galleys that were typical at the time, and they'd send final page proofs for him to make any corrections on. This meant the editor was very confident in the manuscript, because making anything more than minor adjustments in a book which has been typeset in pages means re-numbering following pages and can be very expensive.

The big day came when the page proofs finally arrived. Dad opened the box, and read the first paragraph -- only to discover that his carefully-crafted text had been changed to the passive voice. The copy editor had altered every one of its nearly 500 pages, enforcing the publisher's passive-voice editorial policy, without consulting the editor.

Academic agreed to revert the entire book to its original, carefully-crafted active voice, if my dad would enter all the corrections on the page proofs. It became a family project as we compared every page with the manuscript and hand-entered the endless editing marks. The book became the foundational work in its field. Its meticulous writing, always favoring the active voice, contributes to its reputation.
