What prepositions follow gaze?

For example, I was gazing at/into the sky.

Does the choice of preposition make the meaning of the sentence above different?

Both at and into are applicable, but I would add up in the first case, as in: "gazing up at the sky".
To me, there's little to no difference in terms of meaning.

Looking at the moon maybe? Or the sun?

The sky is all around, so it wouldn't normally occur to me to look at the sky. (I'm sure I do it without thinking about it.)

I might look at the clouds. I sure do notice when storm clouds are gathering.
