-I didn't know this was a ... that this was a 'thing'. I thought this was a movie.
-Well, it was like a hang.

What would a hang mean there?

It's a short form of 'hang out'. I've never actually heard it used as a noun before, but perhaps it's an Australian English term.

To 'hang' or 'hangout' is slang meaning just to be in the general company of someone for no specific purpose. She's stating that it wasn't a date per se, and that they were just hanging out.

Can I admit that a "thing" in the context has the meaning of the date where the movie is the way of pretending. Maybe another meaning does work there?

Nicole is saying that to her it was an opportunity for her and Jimmy to get to know each other on a personal level (a hang) whereas Jimmy is saying he thought it was just business (a movie).

Jimmy says 'a thing' with the intended meaning of something vaguely like a date. Nicole says 'a hang' with the meaning that it wasn't primarily to talk about work but was more of a social occasion—not officially a date but a chance for them to get to know each better and possibly to see if they like each other in that way.

I'd connect it with the idea of "hanging out" with someone.
