Does the bold part mean "the author knows what was very embarrassing occasion"?

and to hear in the darkness the panting, labouring, broken accents beside one, which might mean so much if one could but distinguish them. On the other hand, the author has known what it was to be considerably embarrassed when in the bedroom of a crowded Chicago hotel a voice has broken forth which could only be compared with the roaring of a lion.

It means that he knows what a considerably embarrassing situation is like because he has been in one. Or, if you like, he knows what it feels like to be very embarrassed.

Are you reading this book voluntarily, Jacob, or is it some sort of punishment?

Even fluent native English-speakers find it hard going.

A big part of me is cheering you on in your valiant attempt at reading this book, jacob123, but another part is thinking 'Oh, dear. How many more dozen passages are we going to have to decipher?'

No, it is not a punishment.

I am so happy that I can receive guidance from this website.
