Re: pupil and student?

It's hard to tell what the question is, since there isn't one.

Not exactly. At first I saw no reason to click on the link. Now that I have it's not working for me. (Messenger has a voice feature that I use from time to time. Most online sites do not have that.)

What do you mean by Messenger ?

Re: pupil and student?

It's a texting service.
Great. How can I use it?
Or send me its link.
Try the links again. They may work.

Re: pupil and student?

I'm afraid your "pupil" doesn't sound right. It sounds more like "pew pool".

It had nothing to do with the audio. Post 1 contains nothing that explains your title. You did not include a question. You must be clear about what it is you are asking for. This thread should have been titled "My pronunciation of 'pupil' and 'student'" and the first line of your post should have said "Please listen to the recording below and tell me what you think of my pronunciation of the words 'pupil' and 'student'."

Don't worry about it. It has nothing to do with this thread. Vocaroo is a perfectly acceptable website on which to make your recordings and share them with us. Messenger is completely unconnected.

Re: pupil and student?

Native speakers simply don't pronounce the last two letters of "pupil" as "-ill". Do you know how to pronounce "people"? If so, copy the pronunciation of "ple" for the end of "pupil".

It's also the final sound of total, joyful, and Rachel. Unstressed vowels in English all tend to reduce to schwas.

Pupil is pronounced the same way in the US and UK: PYOO-pl. We do not pronounce a vowel in the second syllable.

Student is pronounced differently in the US and UK:

- US: STOO-dent

- UK: STYOO-dent

In the UK, the U sound is usually pronounced YOO when it follows a consonant.

In the US, you'll notice that in many (not all!) of consonant-U-sound words, we say OO, not YOO.

Pupil /pjuːpl/
Apple /æpl/

Both have same pronunciation in the last syllables.

Pupil /pjuːpl/
Puma /pjuːmə/

Both have same pronunciation in the first syllables.

Hope this helps.

I'd say some people pronounce the schwa and others don't.

Here is my pronunciation of ' pupil'. I hope it is better.

Ironically, when you say it quickly in the middle of a sentence at the beginning (around the 5 second mark in your 2nd recording), your pronunciation is much better than when you deliberately try to pronounce it slowly at the end of that recording.

When you say it slowly, you're stressing the 2nd syllable 'ple' instead of the first. It's PU-pil, not pu-PIL. The second syllable should be shorter, while the first syllable is held just a slight bit longer.

This quick video has a good explanation of the articulation of the word, starting at about 0:23.
