It's 3:00 AM. I text you.

Hey, are you up?
Would you understand that I'm asking/checking if you're not asleep yet?

Up means out of bed.

You don't want to know whether I'm asleep. (The answer is never yes. Or else you woke me up. You wouldn't do that to me, would you?)

You're asking whether I'm in bed. The answer can be yes or no.

No. I'd take it to mean 'Have you gone to bed yet?

(Cross-posted and agreeing)

In the texting context I'd take it to mean Are you awake? People often text each other while lying in bed, especially in these days of covid-19.

"No, I'm not awake"?

My mom could probably have managed to sleep-text.

If you're up, can you still be in bed? I don't think of awake and up as the same thing (e.g. some people get up to answer the phone), but I won't fault anyone who does.

G., don't listen to me!

If you ever text me at 3am, it won't matter what your message says! I have my phone set to "Do Not Disturb" between 11pm and 7am.

I will listen to you. ;-) I like to overanalyze stuff that doesn't need it, too.

I sometimes get text/calls like that late at night. I sometimes sarcastically reply "Yes, I'm asleep".

How did you do that? I could use it.

It's a facility that's available on iPhones, but I imagine there's a similar function on most smartphones.

It's "Do not disturb" on my Google phone running Android 11. You can have up to three schedules. Mine turns on "do not disturb" at 10:00 PM and switches it off at 5:59 AM on weekdays and 8:00 on weekends. I have it configured to "Allow repeat callers If the same person calls a second time within a 15-minute period" and to allow calls from my starred contacts, so emergency calls and calls from family and friends ring through.

I have an iPotato. I'll see if it has these fancy features, too. ;-)

I imagine the smartphones they have in Korea and Japan can even fold your laundry while you sleep.;-)

Yes, that's how I'd take it, because that's exactly how I use it.
