Is this okay?:
I did not know it was you, otherwise I would have acted differently.

It sounds strange to replace otherwise with or else.

And this one?:
If I had known it was you, I would have acted differently.

I think your sentences are OK. You could put 'otherwise' in the place of 'differently' in the second sentence (in the first it would be wrong stylistically). I am not sure however whether it's not formal.

Replacing 'otherwise' with 'or else' in the first is certainly wrong (it means I am certain). But I'm having problems with naming the error. Let's hope someone will enlighten us.

PS: OK, I read it for the second time, and my 'certainly' became 'maybe'. Now, after the third time, it's 'not really' :)

I'm not a teacher, but...

Both sentences, to my ear, sound fine; nonetheless, I would change the punctuation in the first sentence. :up:
