[Grammar] I waited / was waiting for it

I am the first day at school after classes were canceled because of coronavirus 2 months ago.
Should I say to my friend:
I waited for it for 2 months OR I was waiting for it for 2 months ??

Should I say to my friend:
"I waited for it for two months" [STRIKE]OR[/STRIKE] or "I was waiting for it for two months"? [STRIKE]??[/STRIKE]
