[Grammar] If you could have any pet, what pet would you choose?

In response to the question. "If you could have any pet, what pet would you choose?"

1. "I would choose a cat because I think they're cute." - I believe this is correct.
vs
2)"I would choose a cat because I think it cute." - I believe this is wrong.

I teach ESL level high school English and this question has me stumped. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Please note my corrections and improvements to the layout above.

As written, #2 is certainly wrong because there is no verb after "it". Did you mean to write "... because it is cute"?
