My problem with sentence has always been the verb to be. I don't think I would be able to come up with a good sentence using the pattern "Instead of A, he was B".

I can come up with a scenario in which it would work but I've had to think for a while to invent it!

I'm in an amateur dramatic group. One of our members, Paul, always thinks he should play the lead role in every play we put on. This year, a week after the auditions for Hamlet, we were all called in to a meeting with the director so he could announce the roles. Paul was looking very smug and we knew that he'd already started memorising his lines as Hamlet. Imagine his surprise and disappointment when the director read out the list of roles and got to Paul. Instead of Hamlet, he was Osric. He was horrified - such a minor role! Hah! That'll teach him to be so arrogant!
