Is John's coming back a contraction or possesive form?

I think she understood, although she did tell me she wished I'd show the slightest hint of jealousy over John's coming back into her life.

It is possessive but falls in the wider area to ownership.
It could also be written without 's.

Yes, it is possessive. And I would suggest keeping the 's. Dropping the apostrophe might lead someone to think we are dealing with multiple "Johns." The ensuing confusion might be quite unfortunate!
