Chernihiv, located on the banks of the Desna River, was one of the first targets for Russian troops who invaded Ukraine from Belarus, hoping to quickly reach the capital Kyiv, just 144km (90 miles) to the south. (In Chernihiv, civilians are trapped as hospitals and schools attacked by Hugo Bachega & Orysia Khimiak)

Do I understand correctly? "Kyiv is just 144km (90 miles) to the south of Chernihiv"?

I think so. However, it's a little ambiguous. It could mean that Kyiv is 144km to the south of Belarus, from where the invasion started.

According to Google, the distance between Kyiv and Chernihiv is 128 km, so I guess they mean the border.
