Please tell me which of the following sentences is correct:

1. Large number of men were watching the football match
2. Large numbers of men were watching the football match

#2 would be correct if it ended with the correct punctuation mark.

Nazis were followers of an evil ideology who murdered nearly all of my family. Grammar purists can be mildly irritating as they correct others' usage. Can you see why equating these groups is offensive?

Number 1 would work if you said A large number of men.
