From what I gathered in the page linked here, Lineal - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "linear" and "lineal" are synonyms, although I am not sure as to whether they are fully interchangeable.

I don't know if they are synonyms or not. But according to "Macmillan dictionary for advanced learners" they are not interchangeable:

Lineal = related in a direct line of parents and children to someone who lived in the past: a lineal descendant/ancestor

You can not replace "linear" with "lineal" in the above quotation about HenryIV. Perhaps you can replace "lineal" with "linear" but I don't recommend it. I consider the sentence above a correct one.
