Hello.
This exercise is also from "Macmillan English Grammar in Context" by Michael Vince. The progressive was used only in b, j, and p. Is it because they are longer actions? It was mentioned in one of my books that in comments the progressive is used for longer actions.

Yes, the progressive is used for continuing actions.
 
Then you're probably right.
 
It seems a bit of an oversimplification to me.
