[General] make one’s mash/ have a mash on someone

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

..when he gets among his kind he boasts of the mash he has made, and calls you a jolly little things.

make one’s mash = conquer someone’s heart

I certainly seemed to have a mash on her. (O. Henry)

mash = an infatuation or act of flirtation

I'd say the first one is connected with whisky making. For the second one, I've never heard "mash" used in that way.
