My friends enjoyed themselves at the concert.

My friend enjoyed itself in the concert.

Are these sentences OK? I understand we need to use "himself" instead of "itself".

I understand for animals and things we can use "itself"; if it is singular. Am I correct?

I've never taken my pet to a concert so I have no idea if he/she would enjoy himself/herself!

>>>We must use 'itself' unless we are speaking of a family pet.<<<

Not true. If I know the gender of any animal, I use him/her.

Is "themselves" any word? I understand this is not the valid word.

It is valid; it is the reflexive form of "they".

"Themself" is considered informal. It is used as the gender-neutral reflexive for him/her.
