I was reading something, and I came across the following line:

"No such barrier exists, I came to understand, save in man's spiritual unadventurousness."

I am not able to make make sense of the line. Could any of you please make me understand?

1. I believe that the commas indicate that "I came to understand" is parenthetical, i.e., it is an unnecessary remark that has been "thrown" into the sentence.

2. So we should concentrate on "No such barrier exists, save in man's spiritual unadventurousness."

a. I am not a very good reader, but this is how I interpret that sentence.

i . There is no barrier.

ii. Some people, however, are NOT very adventurous in their spiritual thoughts.

a. Thus, they think there is a barrier (where none actually exists).

b. "adventurousness" = willing to take chances.

Having read the explanation in post#3, I thought up the following sentence:

'I came to understand that such a barrier does not exist except in the imagination of those who are not very adventurous in their spiritual thoughts.'
