Hi. It would be comprehensible if Obama and Biden unwillingly accepted these requests, but they did not:
"The White House did not authorize drone strikes against the Afghan Taliban inside Pakistan, other than select strikes against the Haqqani network. Obama and Biden deigned military requests for strikes on the Afghan Taliban in Pakistan as irresponsible attempts to expand the war." So, what does the word "deigned" mean here?

In my opinion it's a misuse of the word deign. Had they done it, albeit somewhat unwillingly they could be said to have deigned to do it. But as the piece says, they did not do it; therefore they did not deign.

It could be an autocorrect of denied.
That's how I read it. It should be denied.

(It's hard to believe that the human editors missed that. My guess is that they saw what they expected to see.)

Yes, we did. I am sorry. But only this time I see that it is an editorial error. Could we merge these two threads?

If it's an error, it apparently got past the editor and proofreaders at the publishing house.

Both Tarheel and Soothing Dave told you that last time, so this thread is a waste of everybody's time.
