My uncle has a very good reputation "on the market" or "in the market" he works or does his business?

A new car is on the market introduced by XYZ company.

Could you please check my sentences?

The second sentence is okay. For the first sentence, try:

My uncle has a very good reputation as a businessman.

In the first sentence "on the market" is clearly unnatural. But to me, "reputation in the market" is not only correct, but clear and natural. I would use it myself, and I would hope to have a good reputation in any market I participated in.

Cars and other tangible goods, on the other hand, are "on the market."

I only wanted to discuss the two prepositional phrases in the title of your thread.


1. Mr. and Mrs. Smith plan to move. Therefore, they have put their house on the market. ( = It is for sale.)

2. Since they are selling their house, the Smiths are now in the market for a nice apartment. (= they are looking for a nice apartment to rent/lease.)

I think you can take this as a rule of thumb: something that is sold means the use of the phrase on the market.
