Our arguing over politics goes back years.

Is this a correct sentence?

Before we continue, please tell us where you saw/heard the sentence. You must provide the source every time you quote someone else's words.

Sorry for that. This is what I thought to be the correct transformation of the sentence "Our arguments over politics go back years" in a sentence transformation exercise from an English grammar and vocabulary practice book.

We need to know the title and author of the book.

Grammar and Vocabulary for Cambridge Advanced and Proficiency by Guy Wellman and Richard Side. Exact sentence is in unit one section 3 practice task 4.

Because to me the sentence feels a little odd and the key has a different answer.

There is nothing special about that sentence. What is the "answer"?

What exactly "feels odd" about it? Please explain not only what the key's suggested answer is, but what the exercise is asking you to do.

The sentence you posed doesn't ask a question, so I'm unclear why there's a key. What is it a key to?

The key says "We have been arguing over politics for years."

That's OK too, but It's not in my opinion better than the other one. Is it supposed to be the correct answer? (I'm not sure what the question is.)

OK, but what was the point of the exercise. How exactly was it worded?
The exercise - Write a new sentence as similar as possible in meaning to the original sentence, but using the word given. The word given is "arguing".

To my knowledge key is an answer sheet.

I'm still confused. What was the "original sentence"? Was it the one in post #1? If so, why didn't you tell us in post #1 what your attempt at an answer was?

Okay, to summarize:

The original sentence was:
Our arguments over politics go back years

The task was to write a similar sentence using the word 'arguing'. The key provided this as a solution:
Our arguing over politics goes back years.

You questioned the correctness of the suggested solution, which we've confirmed.

Is my summary accurate?

However, you haven't explained why you thought it might not be correct, other than it feels "odd". So what is it about the sentence you find odd? (Which it isn't.)

The key says "We have been arguing over politics for years."
My answer was "Our arguing over politics goes back years".
I wanted to know the grammatical correctness of my answer and that I have gladly received.

In future, please give us the full context in post #1. If you'd given us the original sentence and explained the point of the exercise in post #1, this would have been a much shorter thread.
