Dear Teachers,

In Academy Street by Mary Costello, a girl wrote a letter to a hospital to ask for a job as a nurse. Later she received a feedback:

"she receives a letter from the Mater Hospital offering her a place as a trainee nurse, pending an interview, character references and the payment of a fee."

I am not fully understand the underlined part. I think, hospital said that she would be subject for an interview, she should submit references on her characteristics and she should pay a fee. In case everything is ok, she would be admitted.

Please tell me whether my understanding is correct. Thanks for your time.

There is such a thing as "conditional offer" whereby an offer is made to a candidate subject to satisfying other conditions or tests to be administered later.

She could have the job if her references were good, the interview went well, and she paid the fee.

So the job was available, but she had to make it over three hurdles.

The references are to her "character," not her "characteristics."
