What does "penny" mean here? Is it a noun? Or an adjective? Penny usually refers to a coin and so my guess is that "a small amount of money is sufficient to make you depressed." I've browsed the Wiki article and found not clue there.

==================
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is an American dark fantasy television series created by John Logan for Showtime.

Can Resident Evil (not of the penny dreadfuls) be counted as dreadful?

The people who called them "penny dreadfuls" thought the writing was dreadful. Most of them probably never read any.

It's not King Lear. Snobs might say it's dreadful. Fans might disagree.

I always thought that the "dreadful" in "Penny Dreadful" referred to the feeling of dread that was induced in the reader because many of them were horror stories. Live and learn!

I think the word dreadful was intended to give some sense of the often horrific and gruesome content of the literature, as well as being a pejorative way to describe the pulpy sensationalism.

They were until the 1860s called penny bloods, since the stories tended to feature murder and violence.

I don't understand where this question comes from. Are you just asking whether Resident Evil is poorly written? Or whether it can be compared to penny dreadfuls in any way?

I though Resident Evil is well written. The question is probably derived from my misunderstanding of "penny dreadfuls". What does "penny" mean here? Penny usually refers to the smallest unit of money. So I guess "penny bloods" is like "mini bloods/little murders" - a wild guess here. What does "penny bloods" mean?

The answers to those questions can be found in the first paragraph of the article I found for you above.

It's time to move on.

They were probably secret readers. ;-)
