People formed a circle, centering around me.

I want to explain the situation that people make a circle while I'm in the center of the circle. Is it okay to use 'centering around' in this situation?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a native speaker write that, but I much prefer centered on me.

You could more simply say People formed a circle around me.

I don't think this simpler version misses anything that the use of the verb center would offer.
